It's been a chilly month of rain and shine, but that hasn't put off a keen wave of photographers from coming on my Urban Wildlife Photo Workshops. There have been hints of spring - nest-building Grey Herons, Egyptian Geese pairing up, clusters of snowdrops, and on one workshop we were lucky to witness dancing Great-Crested Grebes.
The best photo opportunities as always are around the lakeside. In the early hours of the day, we have the park virtually to ourselves. We've been blessed so far this decade with some great sunrises, which have given my groups many options for photographing waterbirds. Some species like Tufted Ducks and Coots look fab when front-lit as the sun shows off their colours. But with a little persistence and creative use of light - which you can guarantee on this workshop! - everyone got unique images of backlit Cormorants and Grey Herons.
Here are a few January favourites from the lake that capture the light and that late winter mood.
