FENNEC FOXES OF THE SAHARA

Photograph the Fennec Fox families and other desert wildlife on this new Morocco photo tour

New for 2027, this 7-day wildlife photo adventure takes us into the deserts of southern Morocco to photograph the extraordinary long-eared Fennec Fox and other elusive desert species.

Led by pro photographer Paul Alistair Collins and experienced local guides, this specialist small-group tour is timed for when fox cubs venture out from their dens. We'll spend dedicated dawn and dusk sessions tracking and photographing these charismatic little foxes - with opportunities to observe family groups among the dunes.

With additional photo sessions for small mammals and reptiles under the night sky, and birds such as Sandgrouse and Pharaoh Eagle Owl, there's an extraordinary variety of subjects to get creative with in this untamed region. We’ll work with the desert's rhythm, taking our time to feel this special place and find our creativity.

ITINERARY
The following is a proposed itinerary, subject to animal activity and weather conditions.

Fly to Errachidia Airport, Morocco. From there, it's a scenic 1h30 drive through Merzouga to our wonderful hotel in the Erg Chebbi dunes. Upon arrival, we'll check in, have a welcome meeting, before our first evening outing among the dunes, where the soft gold light and shifting sands offer dramatic photo opportunities.

OUR BASE

We'll stay at the magical Hotel Cafe De Sud, among the spectacular dunes of Erg Chebbi. From here, we'll have access to an extraordinary variety of wildlife.

With private en-suite rooms, swimming pool, restaurant, lounge areas, and spots to wind down, it’s the perfect base for both comfort and creativity - and a beautiful way to experience Morocco's wonders.

Fennec Fox

With enormous ears, delicate features and a sandy coat, the Fennec Fox is the undisputed star of this photo tour. These tiny foxes are elusive, emerging mainly during the cooler hours of the day.

Late May is the best time to see these animals, when the cubs emerge from their dens and explore the world around them. Woring with local trackers, we'll dedicate many golden-hour dawn and dusk sessions to observe and photograph these animals in their sandy surroundings. With luck we can capture intimate portraits, playful interactions, and wider images that show them in their desert home.

Critters of the Desert

Some of the Sahara's most fascinating wildlife is easily overlooked. So whilst we're photographing foxes, our local trackers will search for reptile and small desert creatures - identifying promising subjects for us to photograph during the cooler afternoon hours.

Among our targets are the spectacular Horned Viper, Desert Monitor, Agama, Sandfish Skink and Spiny-Tailed Lizard. We'll experiment with detailed macro portraits to wider shots that show how they blend into the desert landscape.

And after dark, we'll look for Gerbils and Jerboas, perhaps even including the vast night skies into our compositions - a chance to push your photography with creative lighting and composition.

Bird Photography

The Sahara's rocky valleys, scattered vegetation and open plains support a fascinating range of birds. We'll make a couple of morning excursions for Houbara Bustard, Sandgrouse, Hoopoe Lark, Wheatears, Trumpeter Finch, and other North African specialities. We often find Pharaoh Eagle Owl roosting in the rocks.
