I made a New Year's Resolution to treat myself each month to a wildlife photography outing free from any specific goals or pressures. The animal most commonly associated with this month is surely the 'Mad March Hare'. It's the season when male hares vigorously pursue females across fields. If a female has had enough of the chase, she may engage in boxing behaviour with the male. Only the most determined males succeed in mating.
On a frosty morning last week, I found myself on an airfield, cloaked in camouflage, watching lively hares to the distant echoes of military target practice. With speeds up to 40mph, capturing their movements on camera proved challenging. Wind and bright sunlight added to the difficulties of photographing their antics, and the hares hunkered down for the majority of the day. But I came away with some great close encounters and views of them on the skyline. Hope you enjoy this selection.Â
