I have been visiting Cley Marshes in Norfolk, on the UK's south-east coast, for birdwatching trips almost annually since I was a child. Last weekend, I finally fulfilled a dream to spend a night near the old windmill and watch the sun come up over the marsh. What better way to start the new photographic year?
Cley is a very atmospheric place for "bird in landscape" photography, with its vast expanse of reed-beds and big open skies. It's one of the few sites I know of in the UK where the light is always interesting and changing throughout the day. Sitting in the warmth of a dark wooden bird-hide, I looked out across swaying reeds, waiting for birds to pass into view . . .
