How To Photograph Amsterdam's Herons

Last weekend whilst visiting family in the Netherlands, I visited Amsterdam to drop in on one of my favourite birds. Every evening in winter, when food elsewhere is scarce, about a dozen grey herons gather at the fish market. They hauntingly peer down like gargoyles from balconies, waiting for shops to close up so they can fight over fish scraps.

I've been photographing grey herons for many years, as part of a personal "50 Shades Of Grey Heron" project to show the various sides of this captivating bird. Neon lights, bustling crowds and bicycles provided no end of creative possibilities. This was a very fun couple of hours to put on my street photography hat and capture the wild side of Amsterdam.
