Easter in Normandy is a staple of my personal and photographic year. One of the biggest pleasures is seeing the pond teaming with spring life, in particular alpine newts. These strikingly-spotted lizard-like creatures emerge from the damp woodlands where they hibernate and seek out ponds in March. Often seen but infrequently photographed, I was keen to make this Easter the year that I'd finally tackle this subject. Here is a selection of my favourites and how I took them
Do It Yourself: Photographing newts underwater with a compact waterproof camera back in 2018 had its challenges - the biggest being that every time I moved through the water, I would kick up a thick cloud of silt and pondweed, and scare off the newts. By placing a newt with a small amount of pondweed into an outdoor aquarium tank, I was able to combat this problem and still capture some interesting behaviour and an authentic sense of place.
